Susie Wolff, Managing Director of the F1 Academy, is working towards a future in which women have a genuine opportunity to reach the Formula 1 grid. Her approach focuses on removing long-standing barriers, creating a visible pathway for female talent, and supporting lasting structural change. Challenging Outdated Stereotypes

Wolff believes the view of motorsport as a male-dominated environment is rooted in cultural perceptions rather than physical limitations. She argues that while racing involves danger, the same can be said of other sports that have traditionally been considered suitable for girls, including horseback riding.

By ensuring that young women are seen wearing race suits, working on the pit wall, and operating within team garages, she aims to change those perceptions. Her goal is to demonstrate to young girls and their parents that there is a genuine and supported pathway to the highest levels of motorsport.

The F1 Academy Effect

The F1 Academy plays a central role in Wolff's long-term vision. The all-female racing series has been created to develop young female drivers and prepare them to progress through higher levels of competition.

According to Wolff, the initiative has already created what she describes as the "F1 Academy effect" at grassroots level. Karting circuits are experiencing a significant increase in female participation as more young girls can now see role models within the sport and recognise a clear route towards a professional motorsport career.

Changing Formula 1 Fan Demographics

Wolff also highlights the commercial importance of greater female inclusion within Formula 1. She notes that women are the fastest-growing audience for the sport and now account for around 42% of global viewership.

She believes this changing audience presents a strong business opportunity by attracting brands and partners that serve female consumers while engaging a market that had previously received far less attention.

Addressing Structural and Physical Equality

Beyond developing racing opportunities, Wolff is also focused on reducing structural and physiological barriers that affect female competitors.

One of her key proposals is the introduction of power steering in junior racing categories such as F2 and F3. She argues that differences in muscle mass between male and female athletes mean the current absence of power steering creates an unnecessary obstacle for women progressing through the motorsport ladder.

Wolff is also calling for greater investment in sports science and hydration research designed specifically for female athletes. She points out that most existing sports science research has historically been based on male data, leaving important gaps in understanding the needs of women in high-performance motorsport.

Susie Wolff's commitment to the F1 Academy centres on creating opportunities, challenging outdated assumptions, and addressing structural barriers within Formula 1.
