While walking my horse, she suddenly became lame and was unwilling to move. After a short period, she began walking normally again, making it difficult to understand the cause of the problem. The veterinarian carried out diagnostic local anaesthetic blocks to identify the source of the pain. Once the painful area had been located, radiographs were taken. These confirmed that the pedal bone had been fractured.

Coffin Bone Fracture

A coffin bone fracture is a break in the pedal bone, which is enclosed within the hoof capsule. The severity of a fracture can vary, ranging from a small break to a more complex fracture that extends into the coffin joint.

What You Should Do

If a coffin bone fracture is suspected, stop all exercise and contact a veterinarian without delay. Keep the horse as calm as possible and restrict any unnecessary movement. Do not encourage the horse to walk unnecessarily or give any medication unless this has been advised by a veterinarian.

Treatment For My Horse

My horse was treated with hoof cast protection during the healing process. The hoof cast restricted hoof expansion, helped to stabilise the fracture and protected the foot while it healed.

A coffin bone fracture can range from a small break to a more complex fracture involving the coffin joint. Prompt veterinary attention, restricting unnecessary movement and appropriate hoof cast protection formed the approach described here.
