Humble Beginnings
Emma Grede grew up in Plaistow, East London, where she was raised alongside her three sisters by their mother. She had no family connections in business and also faced the challenge of dyslexia. Grede left school at the age of 16 before later studying at the London College of Fashion. She also completed an internship at Gucci, gaining experience that would support her future career.
Building A Fashion Empire
In 2008, Emma Grede founded ITB Worldwide, an agency that brought together leading fashion brands and celebrity talent. After running the business for a decade, she sold the agency.
In 2016, she partnered with Khloé Kardashian to launch Good American, an inclusive clothing and denim brand. The company achieved record-breaking sales on its first day of trading, marking a significant milestone for the business.
Grede continued to expand her business interests in 2019 by joining Kim Kardashian to co-found SKIMS, a successful shapewear company. She also worked with Kris Jenner to establish Safely, a company producing cleaning products.
Media And Wider Impact
In 2021, Emma Grede became the first Black woman to appear as a guest judge on the business television programme Shark Tank, making television history.
Alongside her business ventures, Grede supports the 15 Percent Pledge, a non-profit organisation that encourages major retailers to dedicate shelf space to Black-owned businesses.
Emma Grede's journey from growing up in East London to becoming the CEO of Good American and co-founder of SKIMS reflects a career built through determination and entrepreneurship.
