BMW is preparing to introduce the 2027 iX5, an electric SUV that combines advanced technology, luxury features and an impressive claimed driving range of more than 450 miles on a single charge. Positioned as an electric alternative to the conventional BMW X5, the new model brings together familiar styling and a range of technological developments.
Automatic Doors And Luxury Features
One of the more unusual features of the BMW iX5 is its electrically operated doors. Small winglets positioned on the front and rear doors detect when someone gently pulls them, automatically opening the doors. Once inside, pressing the brake pedal triggers the closing mechanism. Sensors help prevent the doors from striking people or neighbouring vehicles.
The iX5 60 xDrive tested features 570 horsepower, 593 lb-ft of torque and comfortable massaging seats. Its matte silver exterior provides a premium finish, although its styling may divide opinion.
Advanced Driving Assistance And Interior Technology
BMW's Symbiotic Drive system provides highway driving assistance, allowing the vehicle to steer while the driver removes their hands from the steering wheel. Drivers can change lanes using either the indicator stalk or the steering wheel, while manually adjusting speed without disengaging the system.
The interior features a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and BMW's Panoramic Vision display, which extends across the dashboard in six customisable sections. An optional 14.6-inch passenger screen is also available, although its display automatically switches off when the driver looks towards it.
An Impressive Electric Driving Range
The iX5 features a substantial 144kWh battery and supports charging speeds of up to 460kW through its NACS charging port. Under suitable charging conditions, BMW states that the battery can reach 80 per cent from 10 per cent in approximately 22 minutes.
Although official EPA testing remains incomplete, BMW expects the vehicle to achieve more than 450 miles of driving range. A company engineer reportedly completed a journey of more than 500 miles between San Francisco and Los Angeles, finishing with approximately 50 miles of range remaining.
How Does It Compare With The Conventional BMW X5?
The electric iX5 and petrol-powered X5 share much of their character, although their driving experiences differ. The electric model offers sharper throttle response, while its lower centre of gravity contributes to its handling through corners. Its electric motors also allow particularly smooth braking to a complete stop.
BMW is bringing the two versions closer together in appearance and positioning, with relatively similar starting prices. The plug-in hybrid X5 50e starts at $77,500, while the electric iX5 starts at $79,800.
The Future Of The BMW X5
The 2027 BMW iX5 brings together a considerable electric driving range, advanced driver assistance, automatic doors and a luxurious interior. With its close relationship to the conventional X5 and a starting price that is relatively similar, BMW is presenting its electric SUV as a more familiar alternative for customers considering an electric vehicle.
Whether its technology and impressive range will attract more drivers to electric motoring remains to be seen.
