A racehorse crashed to the ground during a victory lap at Italy’s prestigious Palio di Siena horse show, leaving jockey Giovanni Atzeni injured after a group of fans ran into the animal’s path.
Atzeni and his horse had been the first to cross the finish line on Tuesday. However, as they made their victory lap, a swarm of spectators moved into their path, resulting in a collision that sent the horse crashing to the ground and Atzeni flying through the air.
Spectator Collides With Racehorse
Footage shows a spectator getting in the horse’s way before colliding with the animal. The impact caused the racehorse to fall, while Atzeni was thrown from the horse and landed on the ground.
The horse was seen getting back to its feet immediately after the incident. It was reported to have suffered no harm, while Atzeni sustained a head injury and remained in hospital, according to local media.
Atzeni’s condition was not considered serious, although he was expected to remain under observation for the next few days.
Horse-Drawn Carriage Crash In Swiss Alps
The racehorse incident came only days after another serious accident involving horses in the Swiss Alps. A person was killed and several others were injured after a horse-drawn carriage crashed into a tree in Val Roseg, near the border with Italy, on Saturday.
Around 40 people were travelling on two carriages through the woods when the driver lost control, police said. While driving downhill, the driver realised that the brakes were no longer working and attempted to steer the carriages towards flatter ground in an effort to slow them down.
However, one of the horses fell, causing the driver to lose control of the carriage before it crashed into a tree. Passengers were thrown onto the path following the collision.
One Person Killed In Carriage Crash
A 73-year-old woman was killed in the Swiss Alps accident, while two of the injured people were reported to be in serious condition. Two helicopters and several ambulances were sent to the scene, according to local reports.
Images from the scene showed the wreckage of the horse-drawn carriages after they smashed into the tree. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
A police statement said the driver had realised the braking power was insufficient on a sloping section of the route and had attempted to steer the three-horse carriage towards flatter ground to reduce its speed.
Racehorse Crash Leaves Jockey Under Observation
The racehorse crash at the Palio di Siena left Giovanni Atzeni with a head injury after the horse was brought down when a spectator moved into its path during the victory lap. The horse was reported not to have been harmed, while Atzeni remained in hospital for observation, with his condition not considered serious.
