My 7-Day Horseback Adventure Through the Loire Valley, France

I've just returned from what might be the most magical trip of my life: a 7-day luxury horseback riding holiday through the Loire Valley in France. I booked it through BookHorseRidingHolidays and honestly, I still feel like I’m dreaming.

I’ve always loved horses and history, and this trip was the perfect blend of both with a generous serving of fine French wine, of course. From riding through ancient forests to sleeping in fairytale châteaux, the entire experience felt like stepping into a storybook.

Day 1  Arrival in Chambord

We began our adventure at Relais de Chambord, a stunning hotel right next to the Château de Chambord. That evening, we met the guides and the rest of the group just ten of us in total, which made it all feel very personal and intimate. Over a delicious dinner, we were introduced to what the next week would hold. I was buzzing with excitement.

Day 2  Our First Ride & Château de Chambord

Our first ride took us through the Boulogne and Chambord forests, riding along the Grand Canal. The horses were beautifully trained and clearly well looked after. I was matched with a calm, forward-going gelding named Noir, and we got on instantly. After the ride, we explored the spectacular Château de Chambord its spiral staircase and sprawling grounds are unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

Day 3  Castles, Cantering & Cheverny

We rode past Château de Beauregard on our way to Cheverny, stopping for a gourmet picnic in the countryside (complete with chilled wine and fresh bread). Cantering through the open meadows with the sun overhead and châteaux in the distance was unforgettable. We stayed the night at Relais des Trois Châteaux, where I sank into the softest bed after a long soak in the tub.

Day 4  The Garden of Dreams

Our journey took us through the Sologne countryside to Chaumont-sur-Loire, where we visited the château’s famous garden festival. The ride was relaxed, and the scenery was postcard-perfect. That night, we stayed at Domaine des Thomeaux, a charming manor house surrounded by trees and peace.

Day 5  Entering Amboise Like Royalty

We followed the Loire River toward Amboise, entering the town on horseback through the medieval Porte des Lions. Locals waved as we rode in it was surreal! That night we checked in at Hotel Le Choiseul, a gorgeous hotel with views of the river and château. Dinner was candlelit and paired with some of the best wine I’ve ever tasted.

Day 6  Culture & Castles

This was more of a sightseeing day, with guided visits to Château d'Amboise, Clos Lucé (where Leonardo da Vinci lived), and finally Château de Chenonceau. Having time to explore off the saddle was a nice contrast and gave my legs a bit of a break. The guides were knowledgeable and engaging, sharing so many stories that brought each château to life.

Day 7  Farewell (For Now)

We had one final breakfast together before heading our separate ways. I didn’t want it to end. Every part of the week the horses, the riding trails, the castles, the wine, the people was near perfect.

What You Should Know

This tour is best suited to intermediate riders. You’ll need to be comfortable with walk, trot (posting), and canter across varied terrain. The riding is about 3 hours a day, and though not overly intense, you should have decent fitness and riding confidence.

Transfers are available from Paris, though I took the train to Amboise, which was scenic and simple. The group is capped at ten, which I really appreciated it kept things relaxed and personal.

Also, it’s worth getting a few rides in before the trip to refresh your seat and stamina. I did, and it definitely helped me enjoy the experience more.

Why I’d Do It Again

This wasn’t just a horse riding holiday in France it was an immersion into the French Art de Vivre: food, wine, history, and the slow luxury of taking it all in on horseback. It’s one of those rare trips where every day felt special.

If you love horses, heritage, and the idea of riding between castles in the French countryside, this tour will tick every box. I’m already thinking about going back in spring or autumn next time.
