Cement mixer for horse rugs. Upset or genius?

Horse rugs, horse blanket, cleaning horse rugs, washing horse rugs, horse rug care, horse washing, equestrian cleaning, laundry, tack care, horse care

Would you be fuming if your partner washed your horse rugs in a cement mixer?

Let's face it, keeping horse rugs clean is a constant battle. They get covered in mud, sweat, and heaven knows what else. So, when your partner offers to help out with the dreaded rug washing, you might be relieved... until you find out their method of choice: the cement mixer!

But wait, there are arguments for this unconventional method

Believe it or not, some horse owners swear by the cement mixer method for cleaning rugs, especially for those heavy-duty turnout rugs that won't fit in a domestic washing machine.

Pros

Powerful cleaning: The tumbling action and robust nature of a cement mixer can really shift stubborn dirt and mud.

Cost-effective: If you already own a cement mixer, it's a cheaper alternative to professional cleaning services.

Availability: You can wash rugs whenever you need, rather than waiting for a cleaning service.

Cons

Potential damage: The mixer's paddles can snag straps and buckles, potentially tearing the rug or damaging the machine itself. You can try to mitigate this by tying the straps together.

Fabric degradation: Harsh detergents can degrade the rug's waterproofing and fabric integrity, causing skin irritation for your horse. It's recommended to use specialist rug wash or non-biological detergents.

Labour intensive: Loading, unloading, and rinsing can still be a bit of a faff, according to Horse and Hound Forum.

Drying difficulties: Unless you have a specific setup, drying a freshly washed, heavy rug can be a challenge.

What's your take?

So, would you be thrilled with your partner's ingenious (or perhaps terrifying) solution? Or would you be rushing to call a professional rug cleaner?
